2009 Cabhair
Annual Liffey Swim Report
On Christmas morning 2009, the
CABHAIR swim was held at the third lock on the Grand Canal at
Inchicore, Dublin. This year marked the 33rd year in which
sponsored swimmers take the plunge in order to help raise funds
for the children and dependents of Republican political
prisoners. 2009 saw ten swimmers take to the cold water of the
canal with just under a hundred and fifty there to cheer them
on.
Those swimmers are to be lauded for giving up their holiday
morning to venture into the icey waters. The organizers are also
to be commended for having the dedication to keep this highly
succesful event going for such a long time. For the last few
years, the National Irish Freedom Committee has supported the
swim by providing supporters in north America an oppurtunity to
donate toward the sposorship of the swimmers.
Christmas is a time of year when family togetherness is the
main focus. For the children of Irish Rerpublican political
prisoners it can, however, be a very a rough time. For most of
these families the main breadwinner has been taken out of the
family and even a 'little' means alot. Thank you to those that
donated, thank you to 'Kat' for making the ornaments, and thank
you to those who helped promote this online and on radio. The
NIFC would like to thank each of you who helped support this
most worthy cause.
The National Irish Freedom Committee wishes all of our members,
supporters, friends and their families all the best for 2010!
